If you go to Metapsychology, you can read a psychologist's review of the self-help book by Steve Ilardi, the therapist/researcher who headed the U of Kansas lifestyle-depression project ("a splendid book"). It has a number of good suggestions for this in its a chapter devoted to what's called anti-ruminative activities.
A simple approach - stay in touch with your feelings, be mindful, be aware of mood shifts and spot the false or otherwise useless thoughts that trigger bad mood shifts. You don't have to struggle with a negative thought. Just see it for what it is and let it go. Also, you can replace a negative thought with two positive ones.
