Upgrading my home PC......What parts to use?
I am going to be buying new RAM and a hard drive for my home PC. It is a systemax purchased from tiger direct. I current have 256mb/80G internals. What do you think are the best components for the best value?

Mobo is motherboard.
You'll need to check the motherboard model number online to see what type of RAM and what type of processor is compatable with the motherboard.
If it's too old though, you might need a new one. And you'll save a lot of money if you go to a local mom 'n' pop shop computer store over a computer warehouse giant. Plus, the service you'll get is knowlegable and not just a 18-year-old kid with a bunch of gel in his hair looking to sell you something for a commision.
Yar.

That is more or less a custom built system. You'll need to know who built the mobo and the specs for it before you can buy any RAM. You need to know the speed, size, etc. that the mobo will support. Then shoot for at least 1GB of RAM. Get the largest and fastest hard drive that you can afford, go with a SATA drive if your mobo supports it. That will increase your file access speed right there. Then consider the RPM's on the drive itself, the more RPM's the faster the drive can access the files that are on it. If you only have 1 hard drive you'll have to transfer your stuff to the new drive. You can use Norton "Ghost" to do this or there are several other programs that can do this. If you get a Western Digital drive, or know someone who has gotten one, they come with a utility CD to help you transfer the files to the new drive. The drives will have to hooked in a "slave-master" configuration to do that. You will have to re-activate Windows XP after you transfer it's files to the new hard drive. You'll do that by phone using key codes.

If you don't know... you best be careful. I don't know the specs of your motherboard so there really is no way to tell you what to get. If you buy the wrong kind of ram... it won't work. If you buy a SATA hard drive, but your mobo doesn't support it... it won't work. If you can find out what your motherboard supports, then you can go from there. Otherwise you just may be in for a world of hurt.

I would recommend at least 1gb of ram(the fastest that your motherboard will support). Then go to tigerdirect.com and you can get a 320gb hard drive for $69.99 after rebates. Here is a link http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTool... .
>> I agree with a_red_wine_guy , if you dont know what you are doing, then dont do it.

PC are now so cheap that you'd better avoid problems and just buy a first price one
